It's embarrassing to admit but my experience of Japanese food extends as far as sushi. Sushi and no further. It's kind of bizarre too because I'm very fond of sushi and like a whole range of other Asian cuisines. So it's time for me to fill this gaping hole and eat Japanese food that is not sushi.
I have had very few experiences other than sushi, too! I've had a teppenyaki thing once, and a bento box that was fabulous at a spot in the city. I am defeated by looking at the menus and not knowing what I should have or will like.
ReplyDeleteWe're being taken out for dinner on Thursday to a nice, reasonably priced Japanese place in South Yarra that seemed to be well recommended. I'll let you guys know if it's any good!
ReplyDeleteOK, so I need to be your japanese food date! I'll take you out to Chocolate Buddha at some point, when I'm a bit richer and have space for lunch-in-the-city.
ReplyDeleteI have eaten Japanese food extensively and have learned that it is ALL GOOD.
ReplyDeleteI especially love unagi (marinated grilled eel) and anythign with tempura. Our local place does a brilliant udon soup with tempura on top - so many layers of goodness!
I'm not convinced I can come at eel, but will take your rec under advisement! I think Japanese in general now has to be added to our list...
ReplyDeleteAlex, I think I may be gamer than you? I had smoked eel at Movida Next Door and it was scrumptious! Also the same night I tried yabbies for the first time, yum! Would love to eat them both again...
ReplyDeleteI have no doubt you are gamer than me. I think I could come at eel if I were sure that I trusted the cook; same as with raw fish, for me.
ReplyDeleteEel is remarkably easy to like, done in the Japanese style. It's cooked in a sweet sauce, sort of barbecue style -- much less intimidating and alien than raw fish. I would be more than happy to introduce you to a great eel if you feel up to it. There is a superb bento place in the CBD where you can try it for $10 -- which includes other things alongside in case you don't like :)
